The Port Canaveral-based Victory 1 gambling ship is scheduled to begin sailing again Thursday, after being idled since March 15 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

'We are so looking forward to sailing again,' Victory Casino Cruises Marketing Manager Shirley Buchanan said, adding that the company wants its customers to both have fun and be safe on their gambling cruise.

The gambling ship — which offers twice-a-day sailings — does not fall under the continuing federal ban affecting multiday cruise ships, such as those operated by Carnival, Disney, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean out of Port Canaveral.

Victory says it plans to take a number of steps to comply with guidelines for reducing the chance of the spread of the coronavirus.

For example the ship — which has a maximum capacity of 1,400 — initially will be sailing with no more than 500 passengers per cruise, with reservations required, Buchanan said.

Victory also is requiring that all passengers, employees and contractors have their temperature taken before entering Victory's office, terminal or ship. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher — or exhibiting flu or cold-like symptoms — will be denied entry.

That will be true of Victory-operated shuttle buses, as well, when they resume operating at a later date.

Victory also is requiring that face masks are worn by all passengers, employees and contractors. Gloves will be mandatory for certain employees in specific departments.

Victory said the masks must be worn by passengers at all times — from their vehicle to the terminal, from the terminal to the ship, while onboard the ship, and when exiting ship. The only exception is when passengers are eating or drinking on the ship.

Victory said that, when removing their mask for eating or drinking, passengers should not allow their mask to touch any surface, but rather they place their mask inside a personal item when not in use. Victory recommends bringing a plastic baggie for this purpose.

Victory says passengers must bring a mask with them, as the company will not be supplying masks.

While the mask needs to cover the passenger's mouth and nose, full facial masks are not allowed onboard because of safety considerations.

Initially, the Victory 1 will sail twice a day, Wednesdays through Sundays, from Terminal B-2 east of the port's Cove area, with a boarding fee of $13 per person.

Day sailings will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays; and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Evening sailings will be 7 p.m. to midnight Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. They will be 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The ship will not sail on Mondays and Tuesdays to provide opportunity for additional deep cleaning of Victory facilities.

Buchanan said Victory Casino Cruises' staff of 400 was undergoing special COVID-19 training on Tuesday in advance of the resumption of sailing.

She said about 100 of the company's staff are aboard each sailing.

These are among the other measures Victory is taking:

Port Canaveral Casino Boat 2019

  • Reducing the number of active slot machines by turning off machines or reconfiguring the gaming area by removing chairs, as well as installing Plexiglas shields between certain machines.
  • Limiting seating and the number of customers at gaming tables, in bar and dining areas, and at the gift shop.
  • Encouraging passengers to practice social distancing wherever possible, especially in high-traffic areas, standing at least 6 feet away from other guests or staff members, as well as asking them not to congregate in groups at slot machines and table games.
  • Having hand sanitizer stations available throughout the offices, terminal and ship. Victory is encouraging passengers to make use of the sanitizer whenever moving from one game to another or as needed to eliminate germs.
  • Using antimicrobial cleaning products in the cleaning of 'high-touch areas' in its terminal, on its ship and on company-owned buses.
  • Having staff onboard to continually clean the ship while sailing.
  • Having the gambling chips used in table games resanitized between sailings.
  • Temporarily suspending its buffet and providing only a la carte food service.
  • Closing the ship's self-serve coffee and beverage stations to guests.
  • Temporarily suspending valet parking.
  • Implementing a new disembarkation procedure to avoid overcrowding.
  • Temporarily suspending entertainment in the ship's Club V. The ship still will have live music on the Dolphin Deck.
  • Marking high-traffic and line-waiting areas with floor stickers for appropriate physical distancing.
